New information about the forthcoming Cruel Intentions series has finally arrived.
Back in December 2023, it was revealed that a TV iteration of the 1999 cult classic was headed to Prime Video.
Like its predecessor, the show will follow “two ruthless step-siblings,” Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), who go to “great lengths to stay on top of the social pyramid.”
However, instead of taking place at an elite private high school in the Upper East Side of New York City, the show is set at a posh college in Washinton, D.C.
The synopsis adds: “In this case, their focus is the Greek life hierarchy at an elite Washington D.C. college. After a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do anything to preserve their power and reputations, even attempt to seduce the daughter of the Vice President of the United States,” played by Gossip Girl star Savannah Lee Smith.
Since that fateful day, additional details about the series have been kept under wraps… until now.
Fortunately, the co-showrunners of Cruel Intentions, Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher, shared exciting details about the show during a recent sit down with Entertainment Weekly.
“We talked a lot about what the peek behind the curtain of a rarefied world that we hadn’t seen before could be, where it felt like it had its own social hierarchy,” Fisher explained.
Goodman added: “Part of the conversation was: How do we stay true to everything we loved about the movie but put it in a world that we haven’t necessarily seen before?”
The duo went on to add that the TV series will include a handful of callbacks to the film.
“There’s the car. The cross necklace, ‘Bitter Sweet Symphony,’” Goodman teased before Fisher added: “Step siblings who do it all.”
Their Entertainment Weekly interview also featured new images from the series, including a snapshot of Smith’s character Annie Grover and Burgess’ Lucien taking part in an intimate swimming session.
Another photo featured the two step-siblings at a luxurious party, presumably scheming, alongside another character named Cece Carroway, played by Sara Silva.
The original Cruel Intentions starred Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe as two wicked step-siblings who plan to steal the innocence of their headmaster’s daughter, played by Reese Witherspoon.
Even though it received mixed reviews at the time, the three leads received widespread critical acclaim for their performances, and the film has become a staple in popular culture.
Gellar and Selma Blair’s iconic kiss also proved to be historic at the time due to the lack of representation of same-sex intimacy in mainstream media.
Here’s to hoping the new Cruel Intentions series – which is set to premiere in November – features more LGBTQIA+ representation.
